About Port Macquarie

Port Macquarie is located on the mid-North Coast of New South Wales. It is approximately half-way between Sydney and Brisbane. History

The Hastings River Valley was first explored by John Oxley in 1818.  Port Macquarie was named after the governor of NSW, Lachlan Macquarie, and the area was initially a penal settlement. In the 1830's, free settlers came to the area attracted by rich pastoral land, natural resources and fishing. The town of Port Macquarie was established in 1887.
 
Today, Port Macquarie has more than 70,000 residents and its historical buildings, museums and landmarks - reminders of its rich past - are an important attraction for sightseers and history lovers.
